History Of Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is basically a disorder which is inherited by a child since birth right from its conception in the mother’s womb. History of Down syndrome can be revealed out from the year as early as 1862. Down syndrome was first characterized during 1862 by John Langdon Down which was widely published in 1866. John Langdon Down perceived that Down syndrome children have some common physical and facial similarities. Common racial characteristics are thereby not an exception to this. Again the history of Down syndrome can be cited back to the year 1959.

It was during this year that a professor by the name of Jerome Lejeune discovered Down syndrome as a chromosomal irregularity. This history of Down syndrome stated that Down syndrome was identified as trisomy 21 which was considered as the smallest which was not correct because the chromosome which causes Down syndrome is trisomy 22. Again in the year 1961, the history of Down syndrome can be revealed which is the most important one as during this year a group of genetics chose this ultimate name of down syndrome which was later accepted by WHO in 1965 and by the USA in 1974.
