Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a form of disorder in which the child has certain additional inherited materials. This extra inherited substance makes the infant to increase differently in the mother's womb. Immediately after conception certain unusual growth occurs during the initial stages of the cell division. Almost every year, one among every 800 to 1000 births is born with Down syndrome. There are three distinctive forms of down syndromes. Firstly, the common one is known as Trisomy 21 which occurs when a child gains an extra chromosome 21.

This is when the child instead of having 46 chromosomes gains one more thereby making the total number of chromosome come to 47. Secondly, another form of Down syndrome is called as Translocation, which affects around 3% to 4% of the population. Translocation takes place when a part of chromosome 21 separates itself from the group and gets attached to other chromosome thereby changing the entire genetic make-up. Thirdly, Mosaicism is the last form of Down syndrome affecting only 2% of the population. Mosaicism Down syndrome happens when some cells have 46 and some have 47 chromosomes. Down syndrome affects a child physically thereby affecting the child's development in various aspects.

Scientists at Harvard University and the University of Texas at Austin have found that genetic evolution is strongly shaped by genes' efforts to prevent or tolerate errors in protein production. Their study also suggests that the cost of errors in protein production may lie in the malformed proteins themselves, rather than the loss of functional proteins.
New Method Enabling Routine Targeted Gene Modification Developed By Consortium
A multi-institutional team led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators has developed a powerful new tool for genomic research and medicine - a robust method for generating synthetic enzymes that can target particular DNA sequences for inactivation or repair.
